Happy Birthday to Me!

Well, I’m sure we all wonder what happens on a girl’s 25th birthday…and no I didn’t rent a car because I can now get the “adult” discount. Here are the highlights from my week-long birthday extravaganza:

  • On Friday night, I wanted to go clubbing at Hollywood Highlands. We were all decked out in our classiest/sluttiest clothes, ready to pour Grey Goose down our throats and dance until our feet would feel like they were run over…but we had to have a change of plans because Highlands was closed. Why was it closed, you ask? Well, it was because they were hosting a Soap Opera awards event!!! Yes, I got to meet the hotties of Passions. You see the guy on the left…yes, that stud. He shook my hand and in a deep, brooding voice, he said to me, “What’s your name?….happy birthday.” There was a period in time when I watched Passions (yes, I too can be lame) and I never thought I would ever meet these guys. This was actually the first time I’d taken a picture with any celebrity. I know, I know, I’m from L.A. too. How disgraceful. Too bad I had to take a picture on my crappy camera phone. It couldn’t capture the intense beauty shining from within…

  • I’ve got great friends and family. Birthday dessert count: 6. Green tea/chocolate cake, cheesecake from Cheesecake Factory, ice cream surprise from Claim Jumpers, garlic ice cream from Stinkin’ Rose, beautiful taro cake, triple-layer mousse cake with white chocolate shavings from Porto’s….oh delicioso weekend…
  • Favorite conversation of the weekend (Stinkin’ Rose 6/16/07):

Jean: What guys do you think are good looking?
Ivan: Guys don’t think like that.
Jean: Come on, of course guys can at least recognize that another guy is good looking.
Ivan: No, they don’t.
Jan: I think if a guy is extremely good looking, it’s okay for guys to admit it. Like Brad Pitt. I know a lot of guys that say he’s really good looking.
Ivan: Yeah, Brad Pitt is awesome!

  • Surprisingly enough, I didn’t get a hangover the next day after my clubbing night with my awesome friends. I got to sleep in the next day and then took a lovely stroll with my buddies at the Getty. The artwork was great. I can’t believe I was standing a foot away from a Manet painting.
  • I bought an electric orange Lomography fisheye camera for myself. I love toy cameras. This is what it looks like:

It takes pictures with a fisheye point of view at 170 degrees. This is an example of what the pictures are supposed to come out looking like:

Will my pictures necessarily come out like that? Hmm, I hope so. I’ll definitely post up some pictures when I get some good ones.

Holga Photo of the Week

Before I post the holga photo of the week, I’d like to recommend a few artistic findings of mine:

1. One of my jet-setter students is an amazing photographer. He really captures the true inner image of people in his photos and also of life around the world. I am especially a big fan of his photos of children. They’re breathtaking. Check out his website!

2. Recently, I went to the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach. They just had their grand opening last week and their permanent exhibit is really worth checking out. I was worried it would be some contemporary art crap, but the contemporary art they’re showcasing is really different and beautiful and left me in awe. And Fridays are free for all! What? Art for free? That’s crazy talk.

Chimay, Hef, SF, and me

This is me – a girl with a low tolerance, who is quite buzzed and nearly drunk from a glass of Chimay and Hefewiezen and a BBQ burger with rum BBQ sauce (she knows the alcohol has evaporated from the sauce, but she likes to think it has added to her cross-eyed vision). This is also coming from a girl who was born in Wisconsin and is currently wearing a shirt that says “Wisconsin: Save cows, eat cheese” but ironically enough just ate a BBQ burger. This girl is listening to The Knife right now, the “Deep Cuts” album and is nodding her head to the right and left while typing. She’s finding balancing a little difficult, but for some reason is finding typing at 100wpm rather easy. That’s the technological age for ya! She could type with her eyes blindfolded and her arms tied behind her back, while balancing a set of plates…okay, maybe not…except for the plates…

This girl is celebrating her 25th birthday in two days! Yikes! She is now able to rent cars at a lower price and is also able to rent a golf cart in Catalina. Wooohoooo! She just spent her past weekend in San Francisco, staying in the most beautiful town of Hillsborough, which was rated the number 6th richest town in the U.S. in 1998 on Wikipedia. Of course Wikipedia’s always right, with their function of allowing anyone to update the site. But it has all the credibility in the world since it was such an amazing town. She got to spend the entire weekend with her best friends, laughing at only the most asinine things that could make stomachs achieve six-pack status. It was the kind of laughing that makes a person throw their hands in the air and then keel over clutching their stomachs. It was that kind of awesome weekend. Jean got to eat like a queen, shop like crazy, drink all she wanted, and even squeeze in time for some Haight ‘n Ashbury fun. Good times. That’s what she’s been up to and since this weekend was so crazy, she just had to write in third person.

The Internet is a Magical Place
June 4, 2007, 4:49 am

I really need to sound smarter when I talk to people about having an internet connection in their homes. I always say, “Do you have the internet?” (The internet, you know, that magical place where magic happens). People usually give me a puzzled look, as if I’m that senior citizen that’s just learning how to turn on the computer. It’s like when I teach my parents a new “computer” word, they use it like crazy. For example, I taught them the word “email” but they use it for everything that has to do with computers, including things that have nothing to do with emailing. If they need driving directions, they’ll say, “Jean, email the directions.” Or if they want to buy some product that you can only get online, they’ll say, “Jean, email that phone battery.” I remember in the 80s when my brother told me that there was this whole “information superhighway” thing happening and how it was going to change the world. I really just thought he was talking about a new freeway being built and I couldn’t understand how less traffic could really change the world. And how!

Okay, well, this blog entry is about the cool stuff you can see on the internet.

COOL THINGS TO CHECK OUT THIS WEEK:

Free streaming TV show:

“Arrested Development is my favorite show of all time. Too bad Fox canceled it, but good thing MSN sees how life-altering this show can be. If you’ve missed any episodes or if you’d like to re-watch any of them, you can see all of season one and most of season two here. And it’s all streaming! You don’t have to download any junk and it’s from a real legit site too.

Music video of the week:

France is just oozing with great electronic music. You’ve got your Air, your Daft Punk and now you’ve got your Justice. Their song, “D.A.N.C.E.” is so addictive with its Mickey Mouse Club-like chants and awesome beats, that you can’t help but listen to it on repeat…repeatedly. The video’s amazing too, showing a bunch of cool T-shirts I wish I owned.

Comedy video of the week:

I can’t get enough of Cute with Chris. His affinity toward horses, cats, dogs, and T-Pain makes me feel like we would be best friends in real life. Real life. Check out this video where he hilariously recites the lyrics to T-Pain’s “Buy You a Drank“. I’m adding T-Pain’s original video to this list too so you can compare the two videos.
